IRISH BEATS - Bodhran Session

The sound of 15 Bodhrán’s being struck in unison is beating off the recession in Kilkenny.

The cities 13th century Kytelers Inn has come up with a novel solution for attracting big crowds by creating a new tourist experience that is wowing visitors and packing their historic venue to the rafters.

Every Monday and Tuesday evening at 6.30pm from March to October, the ’IRISH BEATS – BODHRAN Session’ is unleashed and up to 100 tourists a night have been turning up to enjoy the music and getting to explore the finer points of Ireland’s native drum, its origin, structure and contribution to Irish music.

Much more importantly, they get to play under the expert tutelage of our Bodhrán instructor Damian.  No matter their musical ability (or lack of it) tourists aged from 4 to 94 are encouraged to have a go and as they listen, watch and then copy, their confidence grows and the smiles start to appear.

Music crosses borders and even if the tourists have a limited grasp of English, they are quick to pick up the beat and techniques required. Before long, feet are tapping and the enjoyment of achieving a great tune in such a short space of time is obviously evident.

With comments along the lines of “This was the highlight of my holiday, thank you so much” it is clear that visitors to Ireland want to explore the countries musical heritage and Kytelers Inn have come up with a unique initiative to answer that.

Kytelers Inn owner and Managing Director Nicky Flynn (who incidentally is the great great grand daughter of Charles Dickens) says; “We developed this concept after Fáilte Ireland brought a group of International Travel Writers to us back in April 2011. They were pretty tired and ‘toured out’ when they got to Kytelers but when introduced to the Bodhrán experience, they came alive. Having witnessed that, it was an obvious move to make it a regular feature of our week. Its popularity has grown beyond all expectations."

Visitors to Kilkenny can enquire about places place and start to explore the rhythmic beat of the ‘Skin tray’ by calling Kytelers Inn on +353 (0) 56 772 1064 or checking out their web site www.kytelersinn.com
