We're throwing open our doors and inviting the world to come and enjoy our wonderful food culture for the October Bank Holiday weekend. Now in it¹s fourth year, Savour Kilkenny is a food festival with a true community heart run by a voluntary committee of Kilkenny people who are passionate about food. Growing it, making it, cooking it, sharing it and eating it all will be celebrated this year in a rainbow programme. Further details about the 2010 festival will be available shortly.
Last year¹s festival was bigger than ever before and featured an apple theme to celebrate the 400 apple trees that are being planted all around Kilkenny as part of the Kilkenny 400 celebrations (kilkenny400.ie). Highlights of last year's festival included:
- A Mediaeval Banquet in Kilkenny Castle
- Traditional Apple-Pressing, puppet shows and apple games for all the family in Rothe House
- Outdoor Artisan Food Market in the grounds of Kilkenny Castle
- "Ceramics inspired by local Chefs", an exhibition in Kilkenny Design Centre
- Kids¹ Pizza Parties
- Celebrity Chef Cookery Demonstrations featuring Kevin Dundon
- Traditional Baking Competition (with apple tarts of course!) at MacDonagh Junction
- Soundbites & Food For Thought (a slow food family-friendly eco-lunch)
- The Heart of the Mart (tour of our state-of-the-art farmers mart)
- Food Tours of city and county - taste as you go!
- A Flavour of Savour (where chefs create special dishes inspired by local produce in numerous participating restaurants and cafes throughout the city)
We worked closely with Kilkenny 400 and with Future Proof Kilkenny last year to connect our food, our heritage and our natural environment into a festival with a unique Kilkenny flavour.
