  • First Week of Smithwick’s Experience Kilkenny - open from Thursday 31st July - access from Parliment Street - 10am to 6pm daily, €12/9.50/7 - This multi-sensory and interactive experience will take visitors on a journey through the medieval origins of brewing on the site of the St. Francis Abbey Brewery to the arrival of John Smithwick in the 1700’s, and right up to the present day.  The tour includes a life-size holographic monk and living portraits of the Smithwick’s family members.  During the tour, the Smithwick’s brewing process will be brought to life with visitors having the opportunity to experience the smells, tastes and textures of the raw materials involved in creating the perfect pint of ale. French, German, Spanish and Italian speaking visitors will be offered an audio guide to take them through the tour, which lasts approximately 70 minutes
  • Pop Up Museum - Thursday 21st August - The Parade - 10am to 4pm - On every Thursday in August. The Kilkenny Pop-up Museum, co-funded by the Heritage Council, Kilkenny City and County Councils will be on during Kilkenny Arts Week and National Heritage Week. Explore the archaeology tent featuring artefacts, experts, theatre, excavation pit, animation artists and medieval food, visitkilkenny.ie

  • The Iverk Show - Saturday 23rd August - Piltown, Co.Kilkenny - 9am till late - Attracting over 20,000 visitors the Iverk Show is Ireland’s oldest and one of the largest one day agricultural and family shows and with over 400 trade exhibits the outdoor machinery and commercial stands create a wonderful atmosphere. Founded in 1826 and is now Ireland's oldest Agricultural Show! There is something for everyone from Bonny Baby to Most Appropriately Dressed Lady and four show jumping arenas featuring International Show Jumpers. The cake, jam and savoury section garners huge support while the Great Cherry Cake competition attracts over 100 entries. The dog show caters for all breeds with over 10 competitions and a fun agility class. The vintage machinery and cars attract a large crowd.   • National Heritage Week - Saturday 23rd to Sunday 31st August - at various venues in Kilkenny City and County - National Heritage Week is coordinated by The Heritage Council and its aim is to build awareness and education about our heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation. Hundreds of local community organisations participate by organising events throughout the country. Kilkenny Castle Events

  • The 'Decius Mus' Tapestries have returned to the Castle. The Tapestries are among the great glories of the wonderful historic Ormonde Collection at Kilkenny Castle. The 'Decius' suite had been in the ownership of the Ormonde family for over 300 years and was displayed in several of their residences before being acquired by OPW for display in Kilkenny Castle. It forms a highlight of the Ormonde Collection in the Tapestry Room and fabulous Picture Gallery - one of the finest historic and architectural spaces in Ireland, kilkennycastle.ie

  • Orienteering Course - Following the December launch of the new permanent Orienteering Course at Kilkenny Castle Park, OPW is delighted to announce that three maps, Short (1.8km), Medium (2.4km) and Long (3.5km) distances, are now available to download for free on the Kilkenny Castle Website. The orienteering course is open to all, families, individuals, clubs, schools and what an amazing way to explore the flora and fauna of Kilkenny Castle Park whilst enjoying the exercise in beautiful surroundings.  There is also a small area of the Canal Walk involved in the courses, kilkennycastle.ie

  • Theatre: What Happened Bridgie Cleary - Wednesday 3rd September - 8pm, €15/12 - "What Happened Bridgie Cleary" by Tom MacIntyre is a poetic and dramatic interpretation of this important story. Starring Joanne Ryan (Ros na Rún) who was nominated this year for an Irish Times Theatre Award for her portrayal of Bridgie, alongside well-known actor Myles Breen and Pius McGrath. With an original soundscape by Stephen Ryan (of the Choice Music Prize nominated band windings) and directed by John Anthony Murphy, this is another must see production from Limerick’s Bottom Dog Theatre company, watergatetheatre.com
  • Theatre: Keegan Theatre presents "A Few Good Men" - Thursday 11th to Saturday 13th September - 8pm, €20/16 - First produced on Broadway in 1989 and inspiring an Academy Award-nominated film of the same name, Aaron Sorkin’s A Few Good Men tells the story of military lawyers at a court-martial who uncover a high-level conspiracy in the course of defending their clients, two United States Marines accused of murder . Based on events that took place at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in July 1986, A Few Good Men is a riveting courtroom drama that investigates both the nature of our military mentality and the Marine code of honor, watergatetheatre.com
