  • Callan Variety Show with songs, comedy, pagantry and more - Wednesday 23rd to Friday 25th April - St Brigid's College in Callan - 8.15pm, €10 - Since 1988, the Callan Variety Club has been entertaining audiences with style and enthusiasm. The singing of people like Olivia Maguire, Sinead Butler, Claire Henriques, Teresa Dawson, Susan Reid, Noel Freaney, and John Corrigan promises tremendous value. See page 16 of kilkennyreporter.ie
  • Kilkenny Archaeological Society Annual Debate: Motion is "The Arrival of the Normans was no bad thing" - Wednesday 23rd April - Kilkenny Castle - 8pm - The competing teams are drawn from TrinityCollege, Dublin in the person of Professor Patrick Geoghegan and Dr Seán O Reilly. Their opponents and opposing the motion are UCC’s  Dr Diarmuid Scully  and Dr Paul Maccotter from the well regarded School of History there. The two teams are selected as much for their forensic capacity to demolish the arguments of their opponents as for their deep knowledge of the topic.  Last year the debate was a wonderful manifestation of verbal jousting and featured cut and thrust of a high order, rothehouse.com
  • Concert: JPR Productions presents "Broadway Rocks!" - Thursday 24th April - Set Theatre, John St - 8pm, €10 - Broadway Rocks is a musicals concert with a difference! It features songs and dances from musicals with a Rocky edge that have stormed Broadway and the West End such as Rent, Wicked, We Will Rock You and the classic Jesus Christ Superstar. The show is being staged by JPR Productions to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Starlight shows being staged in Kilkenny. Starlight was formed in April 2004 and have gone from strength to strength staging shows across Kilkenny and further afield around the south east, set.ie
  • Craft: Masterclass: Contemporary Lace - Friday 25th April - National Craft Gallery, Castle Yard - 10.30am to 1pm & 2pm to 5pm, €20/10 - As part of the Interlace education programme National Craft Gallery are delighted to offer a masterclass in contemporary lace and design, aimed at textile artists and lace makers. This Contemporary Lace Masterclass is an exploration of innovation and tradition in lace within the broader context of textiles. The morning session will focus on design thinking, innovation and combined materials with textile. The practical afternoon workshop will focus on traditional lacemaking techniques with a focus on needlepoint. This masterclass is suitable for makers who work with textiles and wish to expand their skill base and explore design thinking from another perspective, nationalcraftgallery.ie
  • Craft: Late Date: Artist talks with Natalie Coleman & Saidhbhín Gibson - Friday 25th April - National Craft Gallery, Castle Yard - 6.30pm - Fashion designer Natalie Coleman and artist maker Saidhbhín Gibson will speak about their work and in particular the pieces they contributed to the current exhibition Interlace. Designer Natalie and artist Saidhbhín represent very different approaches to using contemporary lace.   • Festival: Graig Goes Wild - Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th April - Graiguenamanagh - The 1st Graig Goes Wild weeken sees Pure Adventure, Go With The Flow, Blackstairs Ecotrails, Waterside Bike and Hike, artist William Watson and Kilkenny Recreation and Sports Partnership team up for a 2 day outdoor programme. A memorable journey on water, bikes and mountain hikes. You can walk on water as you test your balance with stand up paddle boarding or drift peacefully down the beautiful Barrow in a kayak. O’Callaghan is one of Ireland’s most interesting younger artists at work today.   • Concert: The Kilkenny Choir - Saturday 26th April - St. Canice’s Cathedral, Coach Road - 8pm, €20/15 - The Kilkenny Choir will present our Spring 2014 concert in St. Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny at 8pm. They will sing Haydn; Mass in D Minor (Nelson Mass), his largest mass, and one of his best known and beloved choral works and Mozart’s Vesperae solennes de Dominica (KV 321), Mozart’s sublime Vespers. The Choir will be accompanied by a Symphony Orchestra, leader Clodagh Vedres with soloists Lynda Lee – Soprano, Sharon Carty – Mezzo, Tyler Clarke – Tenor and John Milne – Bass.   • Horse Racing: Flat Racing at Gowran Park - Sunday 27th April - Gowran Park, Gowran - 1st race at 2.05pm - Gowran Park, in County Kilkenny, has developed into one of Ireland’s most picturesque race courses. The track hosts 16 race meetings throughout the year featuring both National Hunt and Flat Race Meetings.   • Concert: Kilkenny Gospel Choir - Sunday 27th April - St Mary's Cathedral, James St - 8pm - Join them for ‘Songs of Praise. The Kilkenny Gospel Choir came into existence in 2000. The choir is a charitable foundation and through singing we have raised in excess of €400k. The choir is a favourite of former President McAleese and has performed in Áras an Uachtaráin on many occasions, kilkennygospelchoir.com

  • The 'Decius Mus' Tapestries have returned to the Castle. The Tapestries are among the great glories of the wonderful historic Ormonde Collection at Kilkenny Castle. The 'Decius' suite had been in the ownership of the Ormonde family for over 300 years and was displayed in several of their residences before being acquired by OPW for display in Kilkenny Castle. It forms a highlight of the Ormonde Collection in the Tapestry Room and fabulous Picture Gallery - one of the finest historic and architectural spaces in Ireland, kilkennycastle.ie
  • OPW Kilkenny Castle present series of free Garden Talks - Tuesday 29th April & Tuesday 6th May - Parade Tower at Kilkenny Castle - 7pm, free - On Tuesday 29th April, a talk will be given by Angela Jupe of Belvedere House, Shinrone, Co Offaly. Angela is a well known garden designer and plantswoman.  She proposes to talk about Peonies, Irises, Old Roses and bulbs, giving advice on their cultivation. Admission is free. Entry on a first come basis for 120 persons at The Parade Tower. Doors open at 7pm and talks start at 8pm, kilkennycastle.ie
  • Orienteering Course - Following the December launch of the new permanent Orienteering Course at Kilkenny Castle Park, OPW is delighted to announce that three maps, Short (1.8km), Medium (2.4km) and Long (3.5km) distances, are now available to download for free on the Kilkenny Castle Website. The orienteering course is open to all, families, individuals, clubs, schools and what an amazing way to explore the flora and fauna of Kilkenny Castle Park whilst enjoying the exercise in beautiful surroundings.  There is also a small area of the Canal Walk involved in the courses, kilkennycastle.ie
